Criminal Justice

Law enforcement is the backbone of our community. As the sister of a former Chief of Police, I have witnessed firsthand the dedication and bravery of our officers who protect and serve. Professionalism, thorough training, and adequate funding are essential to uphold public safety and trust.

  • However, incidents that occur due to negligence or misconduct by poorly trained officers, demands accountability. No one should be above the law. The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act must become law to ensure that officers responsible for unjustified deaths face consequences, eliminating loopholes like qualified immunity that shield them from accountability.
  • In our jails and prisons, systemic inequalities are stark. Black Americans make up 13% of the population but represent 41% of the incarcerated. This disparity is exacerbated by harsh sentencing for non-violent offenses, including cannabis-related crimes. I will advocate for nationwide legalization of medicinal and recreational cannabis, aiming to expunge past convictions that disproportionately burden men of color and hinder their opportunities for a fresh start.
  • Every citizen deserves full participation in our democracy. For this reason, I will advocate for the rights of those imprisoned, working to implement prison education and job training programs to reduce unemployment and homelessness among the formerly incarcerated. Further, and most importantly, I will work toward preventing the disenfranchisement of the formerly incarcerated by having their voting rights immediately reinstated upon the completion of their sentence, regardless of their convictions.
